Pauanui

Situated on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, Pauanui (meaning Big Paua in Maori) is located less than a 2 hour drive from Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton. The township has a mixed population of permanent residents (approx 800) and holiday makers. During the busy Christmas summer holidays the population grows to around 15,000.

Pauanui is sheltered and idyllic and boasts a beautiful 3km stretch of white sand surf beach. Follow the beach around Royal Billy Point to discover the peaceful and safe swimming harbour with views across to Tairua. The sweeping beach, the harbour and nearby bush and river environments offer plenty of options for outdoor activities.

In 1967 brothers Tony, Ian, Guy and Bill Hopper had a vision for a beachside town with unique street environments that recognised external landscape features and incorporated meandering parks and pedestrian walkways and so Pauanui was developed. These days it is an interesting combination of new lavish homes and those same old-school baches and while a lot of people think Pauanui is pretentious or full of rich people, in reality it is just a sweet little coastal village.

Pauanui is a great place to base yourself to explore the Coromandel region or for simply getting away from it all and relaxing.
